PNF - rhythmic initiation and stabilization Flashcards
1
Q
rhythmic initiation
A
- used to promote the ability to initiate a movement pattern
2
Q
what is rhythmic initiation used for
A
treatment of dysfunctions which affect initiation, speed, direction or quality of contraction
3
Q
what is the goal of rhythmic initiation
A
allow the patient to become familiar with the sequence of movement and the rate at which movement is to occur
4
Q
technique of rhythmic initiation
A
- therapist moves pt passively through pattern
- therapist asks pt to perform active assisted movement
- active movement
- active movement against manual resistance
5
Q
indications of rhythmic initiation
A
- improves coordination
- may “break up” tone
- improve motor planning
- beneficial for people who respond better to tactile than verbal cues
6
Q
rhythmic stabilization
A
isometric contractions from all sides, focus is on eliciting co contractions for stability
7
Q
technique of rhythmic stabilization
A
- progression of alternating isometric
- co-contractions of agonist and antagonist performed by placing hands on opposite sides of body & apply resistance
- no motion
- build up resistance
- shift hand placement
8
Q
indications for rhythmic stabilization
A
- impaired strength and coordination
- work through limited ROM
- good for pt’s who have issues with postural stability and balance
- good for pt’s with decreased stability at a given joint
- can provide therapist info on pt’s ability to reinforce and maintain contractions
