PNF - intro Flashcards
proprioceptive
having to do with any of the sensory receptors that give info concerning movement and position of the body
neuromuscular
involving the nerves and muscles
facilitation
making easier
what is PNF?
utilizes input to produce functional improvement in motor output –> proprioceptive, cutaneous and auditory
what patterns does PNF use?
combines function based diagonal patterns with techniques to facilitate the neuro motor units to improve muscle control and function
what type of movement is involved with PNF
multi joint, multi planar, rotational and diagonal movement
what does PNF improve
- muscle endurance
- muscle strength
- stability
- control
- mobility
- neuromuscular control
- coordinated movement
- foundation for restoration of function
how can you modify PNF
begin with PROM –> isometrics –> active assisted movement –> higher velocity resisted movements
what does PNF require
skilled application of tactile and verbal cues to achieve desired patterns and facilitate quality contractions
overflow (irradiation)
- spread of a muscle response from stronger to weaker muscles
- achieved through applying resistance
manual contact
stimulates the muscle to reinforce the movement and guide the direction of the movement
therapist position
needs to be directly in line with the desired motion and should be facing the direction of the desire movement
approximation
may facilitate increased stability, may be applied with manually or facilitated by gravity in upright, weight bearing positions
traction
applied manually during PNF patterns to facilitate muscle contraction
what are verbal cues and what do they encourage?
- explaining what is about to occur
- both preparatory, energetic, strong and active verbal cues during movement when require strong recruitment
- encourage visual attentiveness by the patient: watching the distal segment, mirrors, etc
