- fungus pneumocystis jiroveci (previously carinii)
Presentation of PP?
Dry cough Fever SoB Weight loss Night sweats
Diagnosis of PP?
Bronchoalveolar lavage (highly sensitive & 90% specific, 95% with biopsy)
Notable radiological feature of PP?
Perihilar ground-glass pattern
What is an additional advantage of bronchoalveolar lavage, besides specificity for PP?
Will also be specific in the diagnosis of other HIV-related pulmonary diseases e.g. TB
Treatment of PP?
Co-trimoxazole (trimethoprim + sulphamethoxazole)
How does management of PP differ in HIV patients?
HIV patients with a low CD4 (<200) receive prophylaxis for PP
- co-trimoxazole or dapsone
