Hepatic vein outflow obstruction, commonly caused by thrombosis/malignant obstruction

Malignancy
Thrombophilia
Trauma
Oral contraceptive pill

Diagnosis of BCS?
A
Doppler scan of hepatic vein
Venography
(trying to identify an obstruction)

Other conditions with a similar presentation?
A
Right-sided heart failure
Constrictive pericarditis
IVC obstruction
- these must also be excluded during your investigation

Treatment of BCS?
A
Depends on the cause but likely to involve thrombolysis
