plyometrics Flashcards
plymoetrics
use of stretch-shortening muscle cycle to produce powerful and explosive movements
enables muscle to reach max force in shortest time
muscle is loaded with eccentric action followed by concentric action
stretch reflex and store plastic energy
to develop a more muscular contraction, enhancing neural adaptions
eccentric muscle contraction
stretch reflex initiates a rapid concentric muscle contraction as a protective mechanism to prevent muscles overstretching
utilising stretch reflex
everyday sport activities
bending hips, knees, ankles before jumping
stretch shortening cycle
1- pre stretch or eccentric muscle action
2- between end of the pre-stretch and start of the concentric muscle action
3- actual muscle contarction
eccentric phase
stores elastic energy, which is immediately used in concentric contraction
eg- stretch rubber band before releasing it
fitness components
muscular power
speed
beneficial for endurance athletes
providing less energy required to produce each stride
bursts of energy
training considerations
to minimise injuries: appropriate footwear warm up 3 min rest between sets low intensity before progressing
warm up increases
muscle temp
core body temp
elasticity of muscles
heart rate and blood flow to working muscles
cool down benefits
return body to pre exercise levels:
HR
RR
removal of waste products
