Plumbing Flashcards
How many people prefer filtered water?
53%
What are the 2 parts of plumbing systems?
Supply and Waste (DWV)
Supply
(Pumped) up feed distribution systems-pressurized-or down feed systems (roof tanks )
Copper brass or plastic piping. Chlorinated PVC (hot or cold)
Plastic must be certified by the N.S.F
What does N.S.F stand for ?
National Sanitation Foundation
Waste (DWV)
Soil (wc and urinals) vs. waste stack
Uses gravity and venting to drain Must be vented to exhaust stench and prevent back flow via (traps)
Clean outs are required to be accessible
Interceptions may be necessary to block solids or toxics from sanitary system
What does DWV mean in plumbing?
Drain-Water Vent
Pex Distribution Center
Looks like a box and it is where red and blue pex meet and distribute
How is PVC siding in gravity?
It is sloped towards the DWV I believe no less than a 45 degree
How to construct Waste systems
- Determine if treatment is municipal or private (septic system)
- Consider use of “green” treatment systems
- Constructed wetlands- Graywater marsh
- Greenhouse ecosystems
- On-Site filtration/treatment systems (aqua saver co. Take graywater and purifies it for non-potable or use
What does sanitary plumbing consists of?
- Waste, soil, and vent stacks
- Branch waste and soils lines and vents; floor drains
What is a soil stack?
Vertical drain pipe that carries soil waste from sanitary units (I.e. toilets). Often also referred to as the main stack in houses. (Bigger takes stuff)
What is a waste stack
Any other vertical drain pipe that doesn’t carry soil from a sanitary fixture
What does SVTR mean ?
Stack vent through roof
What is a stack vent?
The vent of the stack. Extension of soil/waste stack
What is a vent stack?
A vent pipe that is vertical
What is a soil/waste stack?
Portion below the highest horizontal branch drain that connects to it.
What are the 2 purposes of a fixture vent ?
Provided air pressure to push wastewater down to the sewer and allowing sewer gasses to rise up and out of the building
Why was the trap invented?
Block the waste pipe near the fixture so that gas could not pass back up into the building
What are cleanouts?
To remove clogs from pipes. Fresh air inlets. Both required by code
Steps to design supply
- Determine if treatment is municipal or private(well)
What is municipal water?
all pipes, mains and structures owned and/or maintained by the City
What is PEX?
Cross linked polyethylene tube plumbing system
Where should you place fixtures?
Near water/waste water source (service cores, wet columns) and back to back
_____ _____ are designed to provide clean water and to remove waste
