Electrical Distribution Flashcards
What does a basic electrical circuit require?
Power source
Conductors to connect source load
A load
Switch
How is wire size determined?
With the amount of current (amps).
Wires are protected via plastic coating.
Some codes required wires to be Rubin additional protection such as conduit (MC) armored(BX) or Romex(NM)
What does NEC stand for?
National Electrical Code
What determines residential installation?
NFOA 70a
Codes require 2 inspections
1) rough in this takes place when you have installed all of the electrical boxes, cables, conduit, and wires to this repoint that you are ready for the walls to be closed up by surfaces.
2) sign off completion and outlet need to be tested
What is a rough in ?
Ready for wiring or connection of devices
What do hot, neutral and ground wires do for current
They provide a path
Where is a GFCI required?
All outlets near a water source
Residential confidence outlet
20 a every 20’
How many outlets per 20 a circuit?
Max 4
What outlets are need and how far in a corridor/public space?
20a/120v outlet every 50 linear feet
Offices less than. 400 sf require what?
1 outlet every 40 sf
That is (10) outlets which is 5 duplex or 2 quad and 1 duplex
Offices more than 400 sf require what?
(10) outlets min w/ (1) per every additional 100-125=sf
What are P&C plans?
Power and communication plans they are the beginning point got electrical engineers work.
What metal makes the best conductors.
Silver and gold. But copper is most common. Aluminum s used for larger gauge wires due to weight.
What is Ampacity?
The conductors capacity to carry current.
How are wires sized?
AWG ( American wire gauge)
What is green difference between a wire and a cable?
8 AWG and smaller (8,9,10) is a wire
8 AWG and larger ( 6,5,4) is a cable
What are the 6 wiring and distribution requirements?
- ROMEX (NM) OR ARMORED (BX) CABLE
- CONDUIT- RIGID (MC)
- BUSWAY/BUSDUCT
- RACEWAYS/CABLETRAYS
- UNDERFLOOR/IN-SLAB DUCTS
- ACCESS FLOOR
What does NEMA stand for?
National Electrical Manufacturers Association
What does NEMA do?
defines a busway as a prefabricated electrical distribution system consisting of bus bars in a protective enclosure, including straight lengths, fittings, devices and accessories.
What are Raceways/cable trays
Raceways generally mount on a wall in a room where power and communications cables are terminated. Cable trays are usually overhead or under raised floors but carry open wiring.
What does a Busway/Busduct do?
Used to provide path for larger amounts of power over long distance. High rise buildings and factories
What is a junction box(j boxes)
Can be rigid plastic or metal, that hold sockets
Power Question Formulas
ELECTRICITY
Need to know how many Watts?
Watts= Amps x Volts
Need to know how many Amps?
Amps= watts/volts
Need to know how many Volts?
Volts=watts/amps
Example Problem
To determine the total number of amps needed for 2,500 watts of standard 120-volt line-voltage lighting:
I= W / V
I = 2,500/120
I = 20.83 amps
Service entrance equipment, interior distribution equipment and loads are all?
Components of building electrical systems
What are the 2 electrical systems in most buildings?
Electrical power system
Electrical signal or communication system
What is the first step electrical engineers do in the electrical system design phase?
Start by making an electrical load estimate
Where are controls and protection devices installed at?
Switch-Board
