Introduction Flashcards
HS & W means?
Health, Safety & Wellness (wellbeing)
Kinetic Buildings
Climate Buildings they adjust to their surroundings
What do green house gasses do?
Trap heat and make the planet warmer
The atmospheric greenhouse effect
The earth warms up because the solar energy is re-radiated back towards the earth by greenhouse gasses
Infrared Radiation
Electromagnetic radiation having wavelengths greater than visible light and Carrie’s suns heat
Ultraviolet Radiation
Most UV rays are intercepted by the high-altitude ozone layer, but enough gets through to burn our skin
Ozone
The stratospheric ozone (upper atmosphere) is known as the ozone layer and protects our health by shielding us from the suns damagin ultraviolet rays
The ground level (tropospheric ozone) is pollutant with highly toxic effects
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
Very stable chemicals developed in the 1960s that can last up to 50 years. Used for refrigeration, air conditioning, and fire extinguishers. Destroy ozone molecules in the upper atmosphere allowing for more ultraviolet radiation to reach earth where it can damage life forms
Hydrofluorochlorocarbons are less damaging that CFCs
Hydrofluorocarbons contribute directly to global warming but does not hurt the ozone layer
