What is Xuan Yin/pleurisy?
Xuan yin - pleurisy (western medicine)
Pleurisy - inflammation of the pleura
What are the 2 types of Xuan yin?
Wet/exudative
Dry/adhesive
Difference between wet and dry type of pleurisy?
Wet - over production of liquid
Increase pressure on lungs
Dry- little liquid, surface becomes rough, sticky and painful
What methods do we use to diagnose pleurisy?
X-ray
Ultrasound
Bacterial culture
tapping and listening through the stethoscope
What are the symptoms of pleurisy?
Dyspnea/SOB
Sudden onset of pain- usually on one side
Aggravated by cough and breathing rapidly, shallow breathing
Fever
Fatigue
Decrease in appetite
Spaces between ribs are enlarged

What are the main signs and symptoms of retention of phlegm heat in Shaoyang?
Alternative fever and chills, sweats, cough with little sputum, SOB, stabbing pain in chest and hypochondriac region which is worse on breathing and turning
Fullness in epigastric region, dry vomit, bitter, taste in mouth, dry mouth
