What is the chief pathology of cough?
Reverse flow of lung Qi leading to cough
What does “ke” and “sou” mean?
Ke - without phlegm and sound
Sou - no sound with phlegm
What are the chief and related organs related to cough?
Lung - direct
Related - Spleen, Kidney and Liv
What pattern would present with white, frothy phlegm?
Deficiency cold
COPD, Chronic cough
Causes of endogenous cough?
Weak Zheng Qi, therefore W-H and W-C is easily able to trigger the attack
Differentiate been exogenous and endogenous cough
Exogenous
Sudden onset
Short duration
Combine with exterior syndrome
Endogenous Recurrent No exterior syndrome Chronic Mix (excess with deficiency pattern) Need to separate biao and Ben
Signs of Lung heat/phlegm heat and or pulmonary abscess
Phlegm with fishy smell/filthy odor
What pattern would be presented when a patient spits out blood tinted sputum?
Lung heat/Yin deficiency
Signs of heat?
Thick, yellow phlegm
General signs of Exogenous cough?
Sudden onset
Short duration
Combine with exterior syndrome

Recurrent No exterior syndrome Chronic condition Mix pattern (excess with deficiency pattern) Need to separate from biao and Ben
How determine a cough pattern?
- Chief complain - cough and phlegm
- Time of cough - morning/afternoon/evening
- Voice of cough
- What exaggerates the cough?
What would be presented in a morning cough? And what pattern would it be?
Turbid/heavy cough
Feels relieve after phlegm has been expelled
Phlegm damp/Phlegm heat
What pattern would be present if an individual were to have a single cough at night - it’s usually short and mild
Lung Yin deficiency and dryness
What pattern would be present if they are present with a :
Constant cough at night
As soon as they lie down
Presented with COPD, dyspnea, SOB
Deficiency cold
