Q

Energy – Prosperity – Environmental Dilemma

A

Thring sufficiency concept 1998. The more we consume the lesser the quality of life, there’s a range in which we have sufficient quality of life.
Tons of Oil Equivalent per person: USA 6 TOE, Europe 3 TOE

Q

Societal reactions

A

Radical Ecology (No ecology, menonites)(population crash),
Deep Ecology (Low tech, where possible),
Industrial Ecology (Tech to improve sustainability, with environmental considerations),

Q

Mathematical approach

A

Sustainability impact: S
A: Population using the technology
B: Role of tech in economy
C: Impact of using the tech in the environment
D: CO2 emitted per kWh
S = CO2 (only one factor) –> Kaya Equation

Q

Classification of Energy

A

Primary: Nature ocurrent, solar energy, coal, uranium.
Secondary: Electricity, gasoline, fuels. Produced by primary energy. Hydrogen: no mine available, you must to produce the hydrogen, CO2 emissions are involved.
End energy: As required by the end user, Heat energy for a room, mechanical work in industry, personal trasportation.
