what is the membrane made of?
phospholipids, proteins, cholesterol & carbohydrate chains
what is the plasma membrane classified as?
semi-permeable - only lets some things through
what does a phospholipid bilayer do?
creates a barrier between intracellular and extracellular
what is a phospholipid made up of?
a phosphate head that is hydrophilic (polar) and fatty acid tails that are hydrophobic (non-polar)
what do proteins do?
assist the movement of large molecules through the membrane
what does cholesterol do?
stability and fluidity
what does a carbohydrate chain do?
cell marker and communication
what is a peripheral protein?
a cell receptor
what does a channel protein do?
allow larger molecules or ions to cross membrane
what does a carrier protein do?
changes shape using ATP to move molecules against concentration gradient
what model is the plasma membrane?
fluid (fluidity) mosaic (dotted with protiens) model
