asexual reproduction Flashcards
what is asexual reproduction?
mitosis, doesn’t require mate and produces clone or parent cell
what are advantages of asexual reproduction?
energy efficient, no mate needed, quick
what is prokaryotes asexual?
binary fission
what is eukaryotes asexual?
mitosis
what is budding?
an outgrowth of a parent organism (potato shoots)
what is vegetation propagation?
part of a plant becomes attached and grows (grafting or cutting)
what is spore formation?
spores detach from parent
what is fragmentation?
whole organism divided into multiple (worms)

when an egg develops into an embryo without fertilisation from sperm
what are disadvantages of asexual reproduction?
offspring are genetically identical making them more susceptible to die out from diseases
