ecosystems Flashcards
what are abiotic factors?
non living factors e.g. temperate, water availability, salinity, light availability, CO2 concentration
what are biotic factors?
living factors - food, competition, predator/prey, symbiosis, habitat
what is a keystone species ?
an organism that has a disproportionately larger influence on the environment
what are the three types of keystone species?
predators, ecosystem engineer, mutualists
what is a predator keystone?
controls the populations of prey species
what is an ecosystem engineer?
an organism that creates, changes or destroys a habitat
what is a mutualist?
bees
what is symbiosis?
a relationship between two organisms in an ecosystem
what is parasitism?
host organism suffers (not dying) and the parasite benefits ( + - )
what is mutualism?
when both organisms benefit ( + + )
what is commensalism?
when one organism benefits and the other isn’t effected ( + • )
what is a psychological adaption?
involuntary bodily process (heart rate)
what is a behavioural adaptation?
something an organism does (mating, cooling behaviours, nocturnal)
what is a structural adaptation?
part of an organisms’ body (size, shape, structure)
what is an adaptation?
a feature that an organism possesses that enhances survival
