Q

How do plants make their own food?

A

Through photosynthesis, using energy from the sun. This occurs through different organs and tissues in plants

Q

Meristematic tissue

A

Undifferentiated, ability to make other cells. Found in root tips and apical meristems. Like stem cells, both unspecilized

Q

Dermal tissue

A

Protects soft tissue of the plant, controls interactions with plants surrounding. Like epithilal tissue.

Q

Ground tissue

A

Lies between vascular and dermal tissue, acts as storage and support. Has cells that conduct photosynthesis. Like muscle tissue.

Q

Vascular tissue

A

Movement of water and minerals for growth or storage, contains 2 main parts. Xylem an Phloem. like connective tissue.

Q

Xylem

A

Transports water to leaves, walls are reinforced and waterproofed by lignin protein. Provides plant support.

Cell contents die off and ends break down to become a continuous tube (lumen)

Q

Phloem

A

Transports sugars and nutrients throughout the plant.

Contains sieve plates, allow materials up or down

Contains companion cell, Moves products of photosynthesis thoughout plant in the sieve tubes

Q

Roots structure

A

Extend into soil to absorb water through root hair, root hair increase surface area.

The root tip is made of cells that help protect the root as it grows. Produces slimy substance which reduces friction (mitosis) called site of growth

15
Q

Stem structure

A

transports water from root to leaf (xylem) and transports sugar to entire plant (phloem)

Lignin protein helps support the height of the plant

A

Continuous stand of phloem and xylem

17
Q

Leaves struture

A

site of photosynthesis

18
Q

Different layers of the leaf?

A

Waxy cuticle, upper epidermas, palisade mesophyll, spongy mesophyll, lower epidermas, leaf vein system

19
Q

Waxy cuticle

A

Prevents water loss, barrier for pathogens (Bacteria)

20
Q

Upper epidermas

A

Transparent, lets light through

21
Q

Palisade mesophyll

A

chloroplasts with chlorophyll

22
Q

Spongy mesophyll

A

air spaces for circulation

23
Q

Lower epidermas

A

Stomata, 2 guard cells.

Stomata: Small holes in which carbon dioxide enters the plant through. Surrounded by guard cells that open and close.

24
Q

Leaf vein system

A

Xylem and phloem
