Plant Structure and Photosynthesis Flashcards
What happens in the mesophyll tissue?
This is where most of the photosynthesis in a plant occurs
What does the xylem and phloem do?
They transport things like water, mineral ions and sucrose around the plant
What does the epidermal tissue do?
Covers the whole plant
how does photosynthesis produce glucose?
Through using sunlight
What tissues are leaves made of?
Mesophyll tissue
Xylem and phloem
Epidermal tissue
Where does photosynthesis happen?
Inside the chloroplasts
Chloroplasts contain a green substance called chlorophyll what does this do?
Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose
Name a method to control the amount of carbon dioxide…
To dissolve different amounts of sodium hydrogencarbonate in water which gives off carbon dioxide
Out of carbon dioxide, temperature and light intensity which graph is different?
Temperature.
if the plant gets too hot the enzymes it needs for photosynthesis will be damaged
What is a common way for farmers to increase the levels of carbon dioxide in a greenhouse?
A common way is to use a paraffin heater. As the paraffin burns it makes carbon dioxide as a by product
What is an advantage of keeping plants enclosed in a greenhouse?
It keeps them free from pests and diseases
Why may a farmer add fertilisers to the soil in plants in a greenhouse?
to provide all the minerals needed for healthy growth
What five ways do plants use glucose?
Respiration Cell Walls Making proteins Stored in seeds Stored as starch
How does glucose make proteins?
Glucose is combined with nitrate ions to make amino acid’s which are then made into proteins
Name for factors that are needed for photosynthesis…
Carbon dioxide
Water
Sunlight
Chlorophyll
