Cell Division- Mitosis Flashcards
What does a body cell need to do when it divides?
When a body cell divides it needs to make new cells identical to the original cell-with the same number of chromosomes
When a body cell divides and needs to make new cells are identical to the original cell. What is this cell division called?
This type of cell division is called mitosis
What is Mitosis
Mitosis is when a cell reproduces itself by Splitting to form two identical offspring
What happens after a cell gets a signal to divide?
The chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell and cell fibres pull them apart
Does asexual reproduction use mitosis?
Yes
What does Mitosis do?
Mitosis makes new cells for growth and repair
What type of cell division is involved in the regeneration of body parts?
Mitosis
Describe how a cell divides to form gametes (3)
Before the cell starts to divide the DNA is duplicated. The cell then divides twice during which the chromosomes line up in pairs and are pulled apart. Four gametes are produced each with a single set of chromosomes
State three ways in which mitosis is different from meiosis
i) Mitosis involves one division instead of two
ii) Mitosis keeps the chromosomes constant rather than halving the chromosome number
iii) Mitosis produces genetically identical cells rather than producing genetically different cells
iiii) Mitosis produces body cells rather than gametes
