Exercise Flashcards
What does an increase in muscle activity require?
more glucose and oxygen to be supplied to the muscles cells
Why does physical activity increase your breathing rate and make you breathe more deeply?
to meet the demands for extra oxygen
What 3 things does physical activity do?
1) Increases your breathing rate
2) Makes you breathe more deeply
3) increases the speed at which the heart pumps
When is glycogen used?
Glycogen is used during exercise
Where is glycogen stored?
Glycogen is mainly stored in the liver, but each muscle also has its own store
How is glycogen used during exercise?
During vigorous exercise muscles use glucose rapidly, so some of the stored glycogen is converted back to glucose to provide more energy
What do muscle cells do?
These use oxygen to release energy from glucose which is used to contract the muscles
