Exercise and Anerobic Respiration Flashcards

1
Q

When does anaerobic respiration occur?

A

Anaerobic respiration occurs when you do vigourous exercise and your body can’t supply enough oxygen to your muscles

Q

Why is anaerobic respiration not the best way to convert glucose into energy?

A

Because lactic acid buildup in the muscles which gets painful it causes muscle fatigue (they stop contracting efficiently)

Q

What is the short term advantage of anaerobic respiration?

A

You can keep on using your muscles for awhile longer however Anaerobic respiration does not release as much energy as aerobic respiration

Q

Why do you breathe hard for a while after you stop exercise?

A

After exercise you have to breathe hard to get more oxygen into your blood. Blood flows through your muscles to remove the lactic acid by oxidising it to harmless CO2 and water

Q

How does the body deal with high levels of CO2 and the lactic acid in the blood?

A

The pulse and breathing rate stay high to try and rectify this
