Cell Division Meiosis Flashcards
What does Meiosis involve?
Meiosis involves two divisions
Where does Meiosis happen in humans?
In humans , it only happens in the reproductive organs
What is the definition of Meiosis?
Meiosis produces cells which have half the normal number of chromosomes
In Meiosis what happens in the first division?
In the first division in Meiosis The chromosome pairs lineup in the centre of the cell
In Meiosis what happens in the second division?
In the second division the chromosomes line up again in the centre of the cell. The arms of the chromosomes are pulled apart
How many gametes can you get in Meiosis?
You can get for gametes it was only a single set of chromosomes in it
If a human cell divides by Meiosis, how many chromosomes do the new cells each have?
23
How many chromosomes are there in the human liver cell?
46
Name the organs where gametes are formed…
Ovaries and testes ( reproductive system)
What is the number of gametes?
Gametes have half the usual number of chromosomes
To divide by meiosis how is the genetic content of the new cells different from the original set?
They contain half the genetic material of the original self contained
State three ways in which meiosis is different from mitosis
i) Meiosis involves two divisions instead of one
ii) Meiosis halves the chromosome number, rather than keeping it constant
iii) Meiosis produces genetically different cells, not genetically identical cells
iiii) Meiosis produces gametes, not body cells
