Plant Reproduction Flashcards
What does the style do?
Support the stigma
What are the female parts of the plant called?
Carpels
What are the male parts called and what does it consist of?
Stamens:
Anther- produces pollen
Filament- holds up anther
What’s the male plant gamete?
Pollen
Why do wind pollinated anthers hang out the plant?
So it can be carried away by the wind
Why is the stigma of a wind pollinated plant outside the plant?
So it can catch pollen carried by the wind
Why is the stigma enclose in a insect pollinated flower?
So the insect must make contact
What is the stigma like in an insect pollinated?
Sticky so pollen grains attach to insects
What is the stigma like in a wind pollinated flower and why?
Feathery to catch pollen blowing in the wind
Why are petals brightly coloured and have nectar in insect pollinated flowers?
To attract insects and reward them
What are pollen grains like in insect pollinated flowers?
Small and sticky
What are pollen grains like in wind pollinated flowers?
Larger inflated grains to carry in the wind
What is the definition of pollination?
Transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma
What is it called when a plant pollinates on the same plant?
Self pollination- much less variation
What is cross pollination?
When a plant is pollinated by a different plant
What occurs after fertilisation in the ovule and ovary?
Ovule becomes the seed
Ovary becomes a fruit
What does the zygote develop into?
An embryonic plant with a small root and a shoot
What do the other contents of the ovule develop into?
Cotyledons which will store food for young plant when seed germinates
What is the function of the fruit?
To protect the seed and disperse it
What are the conditions needed for germination? (3)
Warm temps- for enzymes
Water- for chemical reactions
Oxygen- for aerobic respiration
What does the seed use when germinating?
Starch
Lipid
Protein
Mineral ions
