Where can we extract oils from?
Plants.
What do some fruits and seeds contain?
A lot of oil.
Give examples of oily fruit?
Avocados.
Olives.
Give examples of oily seeds?
Brazil nuts.
Peanuts.
Sesame seeds.
The oils from plants can be what?
Extracted and used for food or for fuel.
How do you get the oil out of the plant/seed?
The material is crushed.
What happens after the plant material is crushed?
To press the crushed plant material between metal plates and squash out the oil.
Traditional way of producing olive oil.
How can oil be separated from crushed plant material?
By centrifuge.
Or
Solvents.
What does distillation do to the oil?
Refines oil and removes water, solvents and impurities.
What do vegetable oils provide?
A lot of energy.
Have a high energy content.
What else is there in vegetable oils?
Other nutrients.
Eg oils from seeds contain vitamin E.
What do vegetable oils CONTAIN?
Essential fatty acids.
Which the body needs for many metabolic processes.
Vegetable oils have a higher boiling point than water, what does this mean?
They can be used to cook foods at higher temperatures and at faster speeds.
Cooking with vegetable oil does what?
Gives the food a different flavour it carries the flavour making it seem more intense.
Why does vegetable oil give the food a different flavour?
Because of the oil’s own flavour.
And many flavours come from chemicals that are soluble in oils.
Using oil to cook food increases what?
The energy we get from eating it.
What oils can be processed and turned into fuels?
Vegetable oils such as rapeseed oil and soybean oil.
Because oil provides a lot of energy what is this suitable for?
Fuels.
Name a particularly useful fuel made from vegetable oil?
Biodiesel.
How can you use biodiesel to fuel a diesel engine?
They both have similar properties.
Biodiesel burns the same way.
What does waste oil end up being?
Pet food.
Cosmetics.
