Balancing Equations Flashcards
Atoms are not what?
Lost or made in chemical reactions.
You have the same number of atoms at the start…
And the same number of atoms after the chemical reaction.
They are just arranged in different ways.
What do balanced symbol equations show?
The atoms at the start and the atoms at the end and how they are arranged.
What are atoms called at the start of a chemical reaction?
Reactant atoms.
What are the atoms called at the end of a chemical reaction?
Product atoms.
Balance the word equation
magnesium +oxygen ——> magnesium oxide.
2Mg + O2 ——-> 2MgO.
Because atoms aren’t gained or lost what happens?
The mass of the reactants equals the mass of the products.
What must there always be when balancing equations?
The same number of atoms of each element on both sides.
They cant just disappear.
How do you balance equations?
By placing numbers in front of the formulas where needed.
The number in front of a formula applies to what?
The entire formula.
The little numbers in the middle or the end mean only apply to what?
To that atom or brackets immediately before.
