Q

How does a plant use carbohydrates? 8 marks

A

1) Releasing useful energy- for active transport, building amino acids, released from glucose by respiration
2) Storing, to use later- store it by turning it into starch
3) Making sucrose, for transport- plants don’t transport glucose, use sugar molecules to be changed into larger molecules like sucrose.
4) When the sucrose reaches its destination it can be changed back to glucose again.
5) Making cellulose, to build cell walls- linking glucose in a straight long chain makes cellulose.
6) Making nectar to attract pollinators- nectar: a sweet liquid secreted by many insect pollinated flowers to attract their pollinators
7) Making amino acids to make proteins
8) Making other substances like chlorophyll
