Cells- Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is a cell membrane?
A very thin layer surrounding the cytoplasm of every cell, it controls what enters and leaves the cell.
What is a cell wall?
A tough layer outside the cells membrane, found in the cells of plants, fungi and bacteria.
What is a cytoplasm?
The jelly like material that fills a cell, many different metabolic reaction take place in the cytopolasm
What is a vacuole?
A fluid- filled sapce inside the cell, seperated from the cytoplasm by a membrane. It is made up of cell sap, and in animals there are tinier versions of this known as vesicles.
What is a nucleus?
A structure contain DNA in the form of chromosomes. A length of DNA found in the nucleus of a cell. it contains genetic information in the form of genes.
What are choroplasts?
Small structures found in plant cells, inside which photosynthesis takes place.
What is mitochondria?
A small structure in the cell, where aerobic repiration relaeases energy from glucose.
What are ribosomes?
Very small structure in cells that use DNA to make proteins.
Where is the sperm cell and egg cell produced in
The sperm cell is produced in the testes of mammals. The egg cell is produced in the ovaries of mammals.
What is a tissue, organ, organ system?
Tissue: A group of cells that work together to perform a particular function
Organ: A group of tissues that work together to perform a particular function
Organ system: Several organs that work together to perform a particular function
What is a bacteria, prokaryotic cells and plasmids?
A bacteria is a unicellular organism whose cells don’t contain a nucleus.
prokaryotic cells: cells with n onuclues.
Plasmid: Small circular molecules of DNA, found in many prokaryotic cells, in addition to the main, much larger circle of DNA.
