plant minerals deficincy Flashcards
Name minerals required by a plant and their function
1- Magnesium: Making chlorophyll
2- Potassium: Healthy flower and leaves.
3- Nitrates: Mineral containing nitrogen used for healthy growth.
4- Phosphates: Mineral containing phosphorus used for healthy roots
What is mineral deficiency?
When a plant doesn’t get enough minerals, it results in poor growth. This is called mineral deficiency.
What happens if a plant has nitrates deficiency?
Poor growth. Older leaves will turn yellow
What happens if a plant has magnesium deficiency.
Leaves will turn yellow because there is not enough chlorophyll being produced to give it the green pigment.
What happens if a plant has phosphorus deficiency
Poor root growth and younger leaves will look purple.
What happens if a plant has potassium deficiency
Leaves will be yellow with dead patches
Explain the role of nitrates in plant growth.
Nitrates ( just like nitrogen) is involved in the making of amino acids. Amino acids join together to form proteins. Proteins are used for cell, leaves and shoots ( the above ground part of the plant) growth.
True/False
Phosphorous is required to make chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll is found inside chloroplasts
Nitrates are required to make amino acids
Amino acids join together to make carbohydrates
Plants with nitrate deficiency have poor root growth
Plants with a magnesium deficiency are discoloured (pale yellow)
Potassium is required for healthy leaves and flowers
Fertilisers provide minerals to help plant growth
If a plant is deficient in any mineral, it has a mineral deficiency

Why do farmers use fertilisers
To replace missing minerals from the soil to help the crops grow better
