Adaptation to change Flashcards
Define algae
Algae is a green unicellular or multicelluar orgainsms that performs photosynthesis and lives underwater.
Define adaptations
They are special features or characteristic that helps an organism survive in it’s habitat
Define competition
It is when organisms compete each other for resources in order to survive
What do animals compete for
1- Mates
2- Territory
3- Foods
4- Water
What do plants compete for
1- Light
2- Water
3- Minerals
4- Space
Define Adaptive feature
They are any inherited features that helps an organism survive and reproduce.
What are the 2 adaptation groups
1- Structural
2- Behavioral
What is structural adaptation and give an example
It is to do with the physical features of an organism. How they look like. Example: A lion has sharp teeth to tear and eat his prey
What is behavioral adaptation and give an example
It is what organisms do to survive. How they act. Example: Hunting in packs.
List four adaptations in detail of a lion
1- Sharp teeth and jaws to tear and eat his prey.
2- Lions have a mane to differentate men from female . The density and size of the mane threatens their opponents and warns them
3- Lions has sharp claws to grab his prey.
4- Strong muscular legs: Run fast and knock and hold down large animals.
List 8 adaptations of a camel
1- Thick, double eyelashes to prevent the sand from getting into their eyes.
2- They have pads on their feets and chest to grip and decrease pressure to prevent them from sinking into the sand.
3- Thick lips to eat shrubs and thorns
4- Fur to help warm them up during cold desert night.
5- They have effiecient body temperature regulation to prevent sweating and subsequent dehydration.
6- Sources water from concentrates in cactus
7- 400 ibs storage space on their back for long term water and fat stores.
List 4 adaptations of arctic animals
1- White fur: Camoflouge
2- Thick fur: Insulation
3- Body fat: Insulation
4- Large feets, Help them move easier on ice as there is less pressure so it is less likely for them to sink
How can plants live in a desert?
1- Waxy layer to reduce water loss
2- Spines instead of leaves
3- Stems to store water
4- Widespread roots
Define prey and predator
Predators – an organism that eats another organism
Prey - an organism that gets eaten by another organism
List 2 adaptations of a cheetah
1- Long slender legs to help them run faster
2- Fur colouring for camouflage and reflect heat
