Food chains and webs Flashcards
Define food chain
It is a diagram that shows the transfer of energy between organisms ( what eats what)
Define carnivore
Only eats animals
Define herbivore
Only eats plants
Define omnivore
Eats plants and animals
Define consumer
Organisms that eat other organisms to survive
Define producer
Organisms that make their own food by photosynthesis
Define prey
organisms that get eaten by other organisms
define predator
organisms that eat other organisms
Define primary consumer
Eats producers, usually a herbivore
Define secondary consumers
Eat primary consumers, usually a carnivore but can also be a herbivore
What is the main source of energy for living organisms
1 Radiation from the sun (energy from the light) is the main source of energy
What does a food chain always start with
a producer
what do the arrows show
The arrows show the transfer of energy from one organism to the next,Arrows point from the food source to the animal which is eating (consuming) it
Give an example of a food chain
Grass–> rabbit –> fox
Give an example of a food chain
Grass–> rabbit –> fox
Define tertiary consumer
Eats secondary consumers
What is each level of the food chain called
Trophic (feeding ) level
What are the 3 types of consumers
1- Carnivores
2- Herbivoes
3- Omnivores
Grass
Rabbit
Fox
Identify the following roles
1- Producer
2- Primary consumer
3- Secondary consumer
How are food chains connected?
Food chains are connected by food webs
How are food chains and webs similar and different ?
Food chains is just one path of energy with 3-4 trophic (feeding) levels however a food web has many food chains connected and many trophic (feeding ) levels.
How much energy?
Around 10% of the energy available at one level of a food chain is transferred to the next level. If 1000kJ of energy enters a food chain that has three links, how much energy would be transferred to the top predator?
10 KJ
