Plant and Animal Reproduction Flashcards
What is the definition of External Fertilisation?
When fertilisation happens outside of the female-the male releases sperm cells onto the egg cells as the female lays them.
What animal does external fertilisation?
Fish and other water-dwelling animals.
Why do they have to lay so many egg cells when doing external fertilisation?
The chances of fertilisation is lower so they will lay more eggs to ensure there are enough offspring.
What is the meaning of Internal Fertilisation?
Internal Fertilisation occurs in the female.
Which animal does internal fertilisation?
Mammals and most dwelling organisms-this is necessary as sperm needs fluid to swim to the egg.
Why do they not release as many sex cells?
The chances of successful fertilisation are much higher (the sex cells are much closer together when they are released).
