What is a gamete?
A sex cell.
What is a female gamete called?
An egg.
What is a male gamete called?
Sperm.
What is fertilisation?
The fusing of the sperm nucleus and egg nucleus to form a zygote.
What is a zygote?
A fertilised egg.
Name me the parts of a sperm.
-The Head (acrosomal cup and the nucleus).
-Middle (mitochondria).
-Axial Filament.
-Tail.
When a female is pregnant, there is an embryo growing inside of her. What happens to the embryo in 10 weeks?
The limbs are visible and the embryo becomes a foetus.
What is the placenta?
An organ containing blood vessels that run very near to those of the mother.
How is the placenta connected to the foetus?
The umbilical cord.
What does the mother transport to the foetus through both of their blood?
They transport oxygen and food.
What harmful substances pass from the foetus to the mother?
Carbon Dioxide and waste.
What does it mean when the gestation period is over?
The baby is fully developed and ready to be born.
What is the first stage in labour?
The muscular uterus walls begin to contract.
What is the second stage in labour?
The contractions become stronger and the cervix muscle starts to relax.
What is the third stage in labour?
The amnion breaks and the fluid comes out of the vagina.
What is the fourth stage in labour?
Once the cervix is 10cm dilated, the strong contractions start to push the baby out.
What is the fifth stage in labour?
The baby comes out head first, the umbilical cord is tied and cut.
What is the last stage in labour?
At around half an hour after the baby is born, the placenta breaks away and passes through the vagina.
How do they remove the baby?
They remove the baby by:
1.Cutting the abdomen and then cutting the uterus.
2.The baby is then removed.
3.The placenta is removed.
4.The cuts made in the abdomen and the uterus are closed with stitches.
