Plant Adaptations Flashcards
What do sunken stomata & stomatal hairs do?
Maintain humid air around stomata to reduce water potential gradient
What does thicker, waxy cuticle do?
Waterproof leaves & stems to reduce evaporation
What do rolled leaves do?
Reduces effects of wind to reduce water potential gradient and reduce evaporation.
What do extensive root systems do?
Maximises water uptake
What are 5 plant adaptations?
Sunken stomata
Stomatal hairs
Thicker, waxy cuticle
Rolled leaves
Extensive root systems
What is an adaptation of trees in rainforests?
Buttress roots have a large surface area and help support tall trees. Help tree to collect nutrients from the nutrient-poor forest floor.
Why are adaptations important?
To survive harsh environmental conditions
To protect against predators e.g.cacti
To be more successful when living alongside competitors
