Heart 2 Flashcards
What do the atrioventricular valves do?
Prevent backflow of blood into atria when ventricles contract
Why do ventricles have thicker muscular walls than atria?
So they can create enough force when they contract to push blood out of heart through arteries
Where are the semilunar valves found?
Aorta & pulmonary artery
What do semilunar valves do?
Prevent backflow of blood into ventricles
Why does the left ventricle have a thicker more muscular wall than right ventricle?
Allows it to contract with more force & push blood at a higher pressure out through aorta to whole body, whereas right ventricle only need blood to travel short distance to lungs
Why does blood lose pressure as it moves along vessel from aorta?
Due to it branching into many vessels, the increasing of lumen size & friction
