Mass Flow Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the processes involved in transport of sugars in plant stems
A
Sucrose is actively transported into the phloem by companion cells. This lowers water potential in phloem and water enters by osmosis, producing high hydrostatic pressure. Mass flow towards sink, where the sugars are removed
2
Q
What is translocation?
A
Where products of photosynthesis are transported from a source to a sink by phloem
3
Q
How are sieve tubes adapted for mass transport?
A
Few organelles so easier flow
4
Q
How are companion cells adapted for mass transport?
A
Mitochondria release energy for active transport
5
Q
What is structure of phloem?
A
A tube formed from sieve tubes with no end walls between cells
