what are pilot studies?

A

● small scale version of an investigation that takes place before real investigation is conducted

● aim is to check procedures, materials, measuring scales etc work

● aim is also to allow researcher to make changes or modifications if necessary

● by identifying potential issues, this saves time and money in long run

● a pilot study could check that any materials used are relevant / working correctly

● and that IV and DV are fully operationalised so the study can be repeated on a larger scale

● e.g. to check all observers interpret them in the same way and understand them
