4 stages:
Sensorimotor, Preoperational, Concrete operations, and formal operations.
Limitations of Piaget’s Theory:
- limitations of theory of formal operations.
- Individual differences in the attainment of formal operations
- the cultural basis of adolescent cognitive development.
Sensorimotor:
-Ages 0-2
-Learn to coordinate the activities of senses with motor activities (watching an object pass by
and reaching/grabbing the object).
Preoperational:
-Ages 2-7
-Symbolic representation (using a broom to represent a horse) limited to use mental
operations.
Concrete operations:
-Ages 7-11
-Capable of using mental operations, but only in concrete, immediate
experience;difficulty thinking hypothetically.
Formal operations:
-Ages 11-15/20
-Capable of thinking logically and abstract. learn to think systematically about
possibilities and hypothesis. (pendulum problem).
