Chapter 4: Multi-Ethnic Identity Statuses Flashcards
Multi-ethnic individuals who choose to ethnically self-identify with the ethnicity of only one rather than both parents (one or the other)
Singular Identity
Multi-ethnic identity is an entirely separate category in itself. (its its own special unique mix/combination of the two)
Border Identity
These individuals switch between (rather than blend together) their identities depending on the social context. Ex: when your with one group it this, when your with the other, its that
Protean Identity
A position in which individuals “transcend*” ethnic categorization (I am me. I am human. am beyond race).
Transcendent Identity
The degree to which individuals perceive their two ethnic identities to be compatible or oppositional to one another.
Bicultural Identity Integration.
The extent to which multi-ethnics have a 1) sense of self that is clearly defined, 2) internally consistent, and 3) stable (I know my identity, i know elements that work and dont work but I’m sticking to them, and the stable is seen to be stable across time) Even something that seems to be unstable, is.
Self-Concept Clarity
The extent that one’s self-understanding is consistent with the response of others (do others see you as you see yourself?)
Identity Validation
