Physiology & Health Unit 2 KA 1 Flashcards
Gamete production and fertilisation
What do the Testes produce? (2)
1) Sperm
2) Testosterone
What forms Sperm?
Sperm is formed from Germaline cells in tiny tubes called seminiferous tubules found in the testes
How does Sperm leave the testes?
Sperm leaves the testes through the sperm duct
What produces
Testosterone?
Testosterone is produced by interstitial cells found in the tissue between the seminiferous tubules and it passes directly into the bloodstream
Sperm are motile and require what two things?
1) A fluid to swim in
2) A source of energy
What does successful Fertilisation depend on?
Successful Fertilisation depends on the motility of sperm
What secretes fluids that maintain the mobility and viability of sperm? (2)
1) Prostate gland
2) Seminal vesicles
What do the Seminal vesicles secrete?
The Seminal vesicles secrete a fluid rich in fructose (to provide energy) and hormonal-compounds
What does the Prostate gland secrete?
The Prostate gland secretes a thin, lubricating liquid containing enzymes which help to keep the fluid at the optimum viscosity for sperm motility
What does Semen contain? (2)
1) Sperm from the testes
2) Fluid secretions from the seminal vesicles and prostate gland
What are the female gametes called?
The female gametes are called Ova (eggs)
What produces Ova?
Ova are produced from Germaline cells in the ovaries
What do Ovaries contain?
Ovaries contain immature ova in various stages of development
What surrounds each ovum?
What does it do?
A Follicle surrounds each ovum and secretes the hormone oestrogen, protecting the developing ovum
After ovulation what happens to the Follicle?
After the ovum is released the follicle develops into a Corpus luteum (hormone secreting body)
