Neurobiology Unit 3 KA 2 Flashcards
The Cerebral Cortex
What is the Cerebral cortex?
The Cerebral cortex is the centre of conscious thought; it also recalls memories and alters behaviour in light of experience
What are the three Localised brain functions?
1) Sensory
2) Association
3) Motor
What does the Sensory localised brain function do?
The Sensory localised brain function receives sensory impulses from receptors
What does the Association localised brain function do?
The Association localised brain function analyses, interprets and takes decisions
What does the Motor localised brain function do?
The Motor localised brain function sends motor impulses to muscles
Name the four Higher mental processes -
1) Language processing
2) Personality
3) Imagination
4) Intelligence
What are the two halves of the Cerebral cortex called?
The Cerebral hemispheres
What does the Left Cerebral hemisphere do?
The left hemisphere processes information from the right visual field and controls the right side of the body
What does the Right Cerebral hemisphere do?
The right hemisphere processes information from the left visual field and controls the left side of the body
What connects the left and right hemispheres?
The left and right hemispheres are connected by a large bundle of nerves called the Corpus callosom
What does the Corpus callosum do?
The Corpus callosum transfers the information between the two hemispheres
