Physiological Paradigm Flashcards
Physiological
Assumes that mental illness originates from an organic problem (disturbances in the “soma” or body)
Disease
impairment in the normal state of the organism distinguished by a particular group of symptoms and its specific causes; if the observable symptoms are evident then the disease is there
Goal of treatment
reduce the symptoms or get rid of them; get rid of the underlying physical cause
Heredity
Probably predisposes a person through physiological malfunction to develop schizophrenia
Neural transmission
Depression may result from a failure of the usual processes of __ __
Autonomic nervous system
Anxiety disorders are considered by some to stem from a defect in ___ ___ ___ functioning that causes a person to be too easily aroused
Somatic treatment
ECT, psycho-pharmacological drugs, psychosurgery
ECT (electro-convulsive therapy)
Used to treat severe delusions, depression, and schizophrenic disorders
Psycho-pharmacological drugs
Used to treat anxiety, depression, etc.
Psychosurgery
Used after other treatments have been ruled out for serious conditions
Criticisms of physiological paradigm
Encourages the biological rather than social factor of mental illness; symptoms may overlap so causes are not always clear
