Cognitive Paradigm
explores the inner workings of the mind, how people view experiences and interpret them; Perception = Behavior
Cognition
the process of knowing, thinking, judging, reasoning and planning activities in the human mind; Behavior believed to be the result of these processes
Schema
A generalized belief that helps an individual make sense of the world
Overgeneralization
Predicting the outcome of something based on one instance; common in people with depression and anxiety; negative views lead to feeling hopeless; EX- believing you won’t ever get a job after being denied for one position while on a job search
Magnification/Minimalization
consist of perceiving a case or situation in a greater or lesser light than it truly deserves
Labeling and mislabeling
basing/defining one’s identity based on imperfections and past mistakes
CBT
Therapists utilizes behavioral techniques to assist in changing one’s perception (tracking thoughts during difficult situations, identifying and scheduling healthy behaviors in effort to make a habit out of them)
Cognitive restructuring
changing the pattern of thoughts
CT (cognitive therapy)
people’s though processes are accessible to introspection; people’s beliefs have highly personal meanings; people can discover these meanings themselves
Cognitive Therapy
Peoples beliefs have highly personal meanings and people can discover these meanings themselves
Selective Abstraction
Consists of forming conclusions based on an isolated detail of an event while ignoring other information
Dichotomous thinking
Categorizing experiences in either-or-extremes
