Physiological observations and normal ranges during pregnancy (normal blood pressure, pulse, respirations etc) Flashcards
What is meant by ‘vital signs’?
Pulse, respiration, temperature, blood pressure and pulse oximetry
Why are ‘vital signs’ taken?
As a baseline and to then be able to recognise if their condition is deteriorating or improving
What three things do we listen for with a pulse?
Rate, rhythm and amplitude
What is the normal pulse rate for an adult?
60-100 BPM
What is meant by ‘bradycardia’?
Low heart rate (less than 60 BPM)
What is meant by ‘tachycardia’?
High heart rate (more than 100 BPM)
What things may affect pulse rate?
Activity, temperature, anaemia, pain, dehydration, haemorrhage, medication, infection
What is the top blood pressure number known as?
Systolic
What is the bottom blood pressure number known as?
Diastolic
What is a normal systolic range?
90-139 mmHg
What is a normal diastolic range?
60-89 mmHg
What is it called if the BP is higher than the normal range?
Hypertension ( >140/90)
What is it called if the systolic number is below 100?
Hypotension
What could cause hypotension?
Shock, haemorrhage and malnutrition
What things are worth considering if the BP is slightly abnormal?
too hot or cold, have they eaten, have they smoked or exercised in the last 30 mins, pyrexia, anxiety, shock
What is measured in respiration?
Number of breaths per minute
What is a normal respiration rate?
12-19 breaths per minute
What is meant by ‘bradypnoea’?
Too few breaths
What is meant by ‘tachypnoea’?
Too many breaths
What is meant by ‘dyspnoea’?
Shortness of breath
What may impact respiration?
Exercise, emotions, pain, anaemia, infection, medication
What is the normal temperature range for an adult?
36 - 37.5 degrees
When would someone be considered to have ‘pyrexia’?
Temperature above 37.5
When would someone be considered hypothermic?
Temperature below 36 degrees
