Physics Flashcards
Electricity
An instrument used for measuring current in a circuit.
Ammeter

The unit used for measuring current.
Amperes
The size or height of a sound vibration
Amplitude - bigger amplitude means a louder sound
This is the flow of electricity in a circuit. It is measured in amperes
Current
The time it takes for a planet to revolve once on its axis
I day (24 hours on earth, 9hrs 56mins on Jupiter)
The mass of 1cm3 of an object. Found by dividing mass by volume.
Density
Movement of tiny particles like molecules or atoms which causes them to mix together or move across membranes
Diffusion
An electrical component that only allows the current to flow in one direction
Diode
Name of the process when white light is split up by a prism.
Dispersion

When the moon comes between the sun and the Earth causing the shadow of the moon to fall on the Earth
Eclipse of the sun

A push or pull. Measured in Newtons
A force
The three things that a force can do
Speed things up, slow things down and cause things to change shape.
Two forces which cause an object to slow down
Air resistance and friction.
A thin length of wire which is designed to melt when the current flowing through it is too high.
fuse

Stored energy in objects which are high up
Gravitiatioal potential energy
The force that pulls objects down towards the centre of the Earth
Gravity
Any material that does not allow heat to pass through.
Thermal insulator
Any material that will allow electricity to pass through.
Electrical conductor
The metric unit for energy.
Joules
The metric unit for mass
kilogram or gram
The energy in a moving object.
Kinetic energy
A component with a high resistance in the dark and a low resistance in the light
LDR - light dependent resistor

Used to measure the volume of liquids
Measuring cylinders
The natural satellite of Earth which orbits the Earth every 28 days
Moon
Term used to describe any object that doesn’t allow light to pass through
Opaque
Type of circuit where the current divides and follows more than one path
Parallel
Word the describes a substance which allows water to pass through it.
Permeable. E.g chalk and limestone are permeable.
Describes how high or low a sound is
Pitch
A kind of switch that can be closed using a magnet
Reed switch
When light bounces off a smooth surface
Reflection
Name given to the process where light changes direction (bends) due to it changing speed.
Refraction
The property of a component or conductor which reduces the current flowing through it.
Resistance
Is the moon a satellite, planet or star?
Satellite
The name given to the rainbow of colours produced by a prism
Spectrum
Calculated by distance divided by time
Speed
Object at the centre of the solar system that provides the energy
Star (The Sun is a star)
Form of energy in a stretched elastic band or compressed spring
Strain energy (elastic energy)
Measurement of how hot or cold something is
Temperature
Instrument used to measure temperature
Thermometer
Units that we normally use to measure temperature
Celcius (oC)
The unit we normally use to measure pressure
Newtons per cm squared (N/cm2)
unit of density
g/cm3 or kg/m3 (Look carefully at units used in the question)
The number of sound vibrations per second.
Pitch, measured in hertz
Form of energy stored in a battery, firework rocket, food or fuel e.g. coal.
Chemical energy
A battery in a circuit converts chemical energy in to ?
Electrical energy
