Biology: Cells and classification (1a,b,c, not in r guide) Flashcards
What is the name given to the type of cell with tiny hairs along one surface?
Ciliated cell
Where would you find a ciliated cell?
In the respiratory tract, on the way into the lungs
What do ciliated cells do?
Sweep the passages clean
Why do root hair cells have long bits sticking out the side?
To increase surface area so more water can be absorbed
What is unusual about a red blood cell?
It has no nucleus
What are the two types of key used for identification of species?
Numbered and branching
What are chloroplasts for?
They carry out photosynthesis
What happens in photosynthesis?
Plants use carbon dioxide and water along with sunlight to make glucose and oxygen.
What is the name of the platform you put the slide on in a microscope?
Stage
Name three characteristics of mammals.
Have fur, produce milk and have live babies
Name two characteristics of fish.
Wet scaley skin, lay eggs in water,
Name two characteristics of amphibians
Wet skin, lays eggs in water but can live on land.
What are the five kingdom
Animals, plants, bacteria, protists, fungi
What Kingdom do mushrooms belong to?
Fungi
What role does the cell membrane do?
Controls what goes in and out of the cell
What does the nucleus do?
Contains all genetic information
What do several cells build up to make?
Tissues
What do several tissues build up to make?
Organs
What name is given to a group of organs working together? E.g. stomach, intestines, mouth
System (examples are from the digestive system)
What is it called when the head of a sperm cell enters the ovum and the nuclei (two nucleuses) fuse together?
Fertilisation
Both plants and animal cells have mitochondria, what do they do?
Release energy. Aerobic respiration happens there. Mitochondria are often called the power house of the cell.
Name a stain used to see nuclei in cells.
methylene blue
What do plant cells have that animal cells don’t?
Cell wall, sap vacuole, chloroplasts.
