Biology: Variation, classification and inheritance 4abc Flashcards
What name is given to the type of feature that can only take certain values, e.g. blood group or eye colour.
Discontinuous variation

What name is given to the type of variation which can vary over a range of values?
Continuous variation

Give three examples of continuous variation
height, weight, skin colour, intelligence, leaf area.
What is variation?
Differences between different living things.
Characteristics we get from our genes, from our parents are know as …………………… variation.
Inherited
Other than our genes what else can affect the way we are?
Our environment
Give an example of environmental variation
Weight difference in identical twins. The genes are the same but maybe one eats more than the other.
What are the few characteristics totally unaffected by environment?
Eye colour, inherited diseases and blood groups.
What are the four environmental factors which affect plants most?
Temperature, moisture, sunlight and soil conditions.
What are the five kingdoms of classification?
Plants, animals, bacteria (monera), fungi and protists.
Arthropods are invertebrates with jointed legs, what are the different groups of arthropods?
Myriapods, crustaceans, insects, arachnids (including spiders).
What are the characteristics of insects?
6 legs, 3 body parts and 2 pairs of wings.
What are the characteristics of arachnids?
8 legs, 2 body parts, no wings.
Why are fungi not included in the plant kingdom?
Fungi do not have chloroplasts, plants do.
What are the main charactieristics of flowering plants?
Flowers to attract pollinators (including bees) and fruit that surrounds the seeds.
What are the key features of amphibians?
Lay eggs in water, have smooth, moist skin and are cold blooded.
What are the key features of mammals?
Give birth to live young, feed young on milk, have fur and lungs.
Within a species selective breeding of characteristics can lead to ….
new varieties. E.g. cockerpoo - a mix of cocker spaniel and poodle characteristics.
What is a species?
A group of similar organisms which can breed to produce viable offspring (babies that can have babies).
