Biology: Drugs, bodies and bacteria (2m and n) Flashcards
What is tolerance to drugs?
When the body gets used to it so more is needed to have the same effect.
What problems are caused by carbon monoxide which comes from broken boilers and cigarettes?
Stops blood being able to carry oxygen as it combines with the Haemoglobin in the blood.
What are carcinogens?
Chemicals that cause cancer
What organs are affected by smoking?
Heart, blood vessels (heart attacks and strokes) and lungs (lung disease).
What is affected by tar in cigarettes?
Cilia in lungs get damaged causing chest infections to become more likely.
What is the main effect of alcohol on the body?
Reduced activity in the nervous system. (Slows things down)
What parts of the body are affected by solvents?
Lungs and nerves.
What organ can be damaged in long term solvent abuse?
The brain ( brain damage)
What are pathogens?
Microbes or microorganisms that cause disease.
What are the four types of microorganisms?
Bacteria, fungi, viruses and Protozoa
What are Protozoa?
Single celled organisms
All pathogens are parasites, what is a parasite?
Something that lives off another organism and gives nothing in return.
Where might you find useful bacteria in our bodies?
In the digestive system
How do bacteria make us feel ill?
Damage cells and produce toxins (poisons)
Approximately how many viruses could fit on a bacterium?
