Physics Flashcards
What is Newton’s first law?
if Fnet=0, a=0
“Law of Inertia”
can be not moving, or moving at constant velocity
What is Newton’s second law?
Fnet=ma
What is a Newton?
measurement of force
(m/s^2)(kg) = N
What is Newton’s third law?
“action-reaction” pair
for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
**Remember: the forces act on DIFFERENT objects
What is Newton’s law of gravitation?
every object of some mass can create a force of gravity
also called the “Inverse Square Law”
remember that the radius needs to be measured from the centre of the masses
In which direction is torque positive?
counterclockwise
In which direction is torque negative?
clockwise
What is translational equilibrium?
Fnet = 0
What is rotational equilibrium?
torque net = 0
What is static equilibrium?
Fnet = 0 torque = 0 v = 0
What is rotational inertia? What objects will have more rotational inertia?
objects will resist rotation
objects with mass further from centre of mass will have a higher rotational inertia
Will you always hit a falling target if you aim for the right spot?
yes because they will have the same acceleration despite their masses
When does an object with projectile motion have its max HORIZONTAL RANGE?
when theta is 45 degrees (Note: this isn’t make speed though!)
