Chem Solubility Rules Flashcards
How does the solubility of a solid in a liquid change with temperature?
solubility increases with increasing temperature (think sugar in coffee)
How does the solubility of a gas in liquid change with temperature?
solubility decreases with increasing temperature (think pop in the fridge vs not)
How does the solubility of a gas in liquid change with pressure?
solubility increases with increasing pressure
Are group 1 salts soluble or insoluble?
they are all soluble (Na+, K+ etc)
Are NH4+ salts soluble or insoluble?
they are all soluble
Are NO3-, ClO4- and C2H3O2- salts soluble or insoluble?
they are all soluble
Are Ag+, Pb2+/4+, Hg2+/3+ salts soluble or insoluble?
they are insoluble UNLESS paired with NO3-, ClO4- or C2H3O2- (then they are soluble)
Distinguish between dissolution and dissociation
dissolution is the process of dissolving
dissociation is how ionic compounds will split into ions, this occurs AFTER dissolution
What is an electrolyte?
free ions in solution i.e. Na+, Cl- that cause the solution to conduct electricity
