Physical oceanography Flashcards
tidal period
time interval between successive high waters
tidal range
vertical interval between high and low waters
macrotide
> 4m
mesotide
2-4m
microtides
< 2m
spring tides
larger tidal range (higher water, and lower low water)
neap tides
lower tidal range
diurnal inequality
A lower high water is followed by a higher high water. comes and goes twice a month.
Lunar day length
24h and 50m
Why daily/diurnal inequality?
because of tilt of the earth
length of lunar cycle
29.53 days
Tidal constituents
to interpret and predict the tidal deformations of planetary and satellite bodies and their atmospheres and oceans (especially Earth’s oceans) under the gravitational loading of another astronomical body or bodies (especially the Moon and Sun).
High atmospheric pressure
pushes water level down
Low atmospheric pressure
lifts water level up
melting greenland an antarcitca:
greenland Little impact, Antarctica large impact.
Why does melting of Antarctica have a large impact?
gravity effects. Ice mass attracts water, hence disappearing land ice gives a local drop in sea level and a higher rise elsewhere.
potential temperature
Used to characterize water masses. The temperature a parcel would have if brought adiabatically to the surface.
thermocline
sharp drop in temperature with depth
salinity in top layer less stable because
evaporation and precipation
earth receives short wave, emits
long wave
