6
Q

conservative elements

A

Residence time is larger than circulation time, so evenly distributed. Don’t do much. Rt > 100.000 years

Q

Recycled / nutrients

A

Taken up in the top layer, sink down. Reminalised by bacteria as depth increases. Rt= 1000-100000 years

Q

Higher nutrient concentration in pacific because

A

deep ocean circulation transports sunken down biological material to the pacific. CaCo3 and SiO2 remineralize deeper in the water column –> higher in pacific.

Q

Henry’s law

A

if the pressure of a gas over liquid increases, the amount of gas dissolved in the liquid will increase proportionally. Conversely, as the gas pressure decreases, the amount of gas dissolved in the solution drops.

13
Q

Why low oxygen concentration in pacific at 2000m depth

A

Conveyor belt moves oxygen rich waters from the Atlantic to the pacific, and in the meantime the bacteria use up all the oxygen. So you end up with low oxygen concentrations in the pacific.

Q

What is a nutrient?

A

A chemical that an organism needs to live and grow or a substance used in an organisms metabolism which must be taken in from its environment.

16
Q

Why important to study CO2 in the oceans

A

Oceans absorb more than one third of the CO2 emitted in the atmosphere, The reservoir of CO2 in the oceans is much larger than that of the atmosphere
