physical geography topic 2 Flashcards
what is a littoral coast
a coast line that stretches out on the sea
what are sediment cells
they are regions in which sediment movement on the near shore is largely contained
strata
layers of rock
bedding planes
natural breaks in rock caused by gaps in time period during rock formation (horizontal)
joint
fractures formed as sediment dry out (vertical)
folds
formed by pressure in tectonic activity
fault
pressure and stress put on rocks
how is Dalmatia coastline formed
ridges and valley form parallel to each other
sea level rise means that the valleys are flooded and only some are showing above the surface
what is drift alined
seidment transferred along the coast by LSD
swash allied
sediment washes onto the shore
offshore bar
a bar submerge or partly which is created by destructive waves breaking sediment off the beach
and constructive waves depositing it off shore bars
a bar
a spit extents across a bay
a tombolo
a beach formed beteen an island and the main land
a cuspate forland
trianglar shaped headland formed when 2 beaches experiance LSD in opposite directions
sediment deposited at the point they meet
example of sand dunes
stud land Dorset
what is the humus
dead organic matter that increases the fertility, moisture and nutrients
what are pioneer species
the first pepole there often halseptic which the die and increase the nutrents and mostuire of the soild
what is a climax community
Over time this increases the diversity of species which can survive in the environment, until eventually the climax community is reached
Bangladesh coastal flooding
-Cyclone Sidr lead to a 6m storm surge and was only a Cat 4 hurricane
-It killed over 3000 people and destroyed 685,528 hectares of farmland
Storm surges have historically hit Bangladesh and been even deadlier. Costs of $1.7 billion
Bangladesh is vulnerable to coastal flooding for a variety of reasons:
It is extremely low lying, and nearly half the countries population live less than 10m above sea level
